Rome [Italy], August 2: A series of aftershocks rattled the area around the southern Italian city of Naples overnight after the strongest earthquake to hit the region in around 40 years.
The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology recorded aftershocks through Saturday morning after Friday evening's magnitude-4.7 earthquake, including one measuring magnitude 3.8. The epicentre was in the Phlegraean Fields, a volcanically active area west of Naples. The main quake and tremors were felt most strongly in towns around the Phlegraean Fields, but were also clearly felt in Naples and on the islands of Ischia and Procida. Authorities said 21 people had been injured.
