Duc Thinh's "Boss of Shells" leaves theaters, how is the box office?

May 30, 2026

Hanoi [Vietnam], May 30: After more than a month since its release, Duc Thinh's "Trùm So" only grossed over 17.5 billion VND, suffering a loss despite producer Thanh Thuy's efforts to promote it.
On the Box Office Vietnam system, "Trùm So" is no longer listed among films currently showing in theaters. To date, the film, starring Miss Mai Phương, has only grossed 17.5 billion VND after more than a month of release. With this figure, the project marking Đức Thịnh 's return to filmmaking is almost certainly a loss.
Which Vietnamese films does 'Trùm So' compete with?
Released on April 26th, "Trùm So" (The Oyster King) faced competition from other films such as "Phí Phong: Quỷ mau rừng thieng" (Floating King: Blood Demon of the Sacred Forest), "Heo năm mong" (Five-Toed Pig), "Anh Hùng" (Hero), and "Đại tiệc trăng mau 8" (Blood Moon Feast 8 ). Initially, the film seemed to lag behind its rivals, even falling far behind in box office rankings. In response to this, producer Thanh Thúy actively participated in promotional activities at theaters, leading to positive changes in revenue. However, this improvement was not enough to save " Trùm So " from the risk of financial loss.
Recently, Thanh Thúy and Đức Thịnh have been actively involved in a series of interactions with students, hoping to spread their passion for the profession to young people. Through real-life stories, experiences, and both failures and successes behind the scenes, the couple hopes to inspire the younger generation pursuing their artistic dreams, showing them that success doesn't come from luck, but is built on kindness, passion, and perseverance.
In 2026, the Vietnamese box office saw many Vietnamese films surpass the 100 billion VND mark, including "Tho Oi" (449 billion VND), " Nha Ba Toi Mot Phong " (111 billion VND), "Tai" (113 billion VND), "Phi Phong: Quy Mau Rung Thieng" (201 billion VND)... However, there were also quite a few films with dismal revenue, facing the risk of losses such as "Huyen Tinh Da Trach" (473 million VND), "Bay Tien" (2.9 billion VND), "Mot Thoi Ta Da Yeu" (1.9 billion VND)...
According to Box Office Vietnam data, Doraemon Movie 45 is currently leading the box office on May 29th, far surpassing its competitors with 6.5 billion VND, equivalent to over 65,000 tickets sold. To date, the film has exceeded 126 billion VND, continuously receiving positive feedback from audiences. Meanwhile, the remaining four films in the top 5 for the day are The Haunted House 5 (1.8 billion VND), Hermit Crabs (1.6 billion VND), Goodbye Gohan (694 million VND), and Three-legged Bully (272 million VND).
Over the past three days of the box office, the top 5 highest-grossing films lacked any Vietnamese movies. A representative from Box Office Vietnam commented: "Audiences who love international cinema certainly had an exciting weekend with so many foreign film choices at theaters. The top 5 films come from 5 different film industries (Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, South Korea, and the US), ranging from classic IPs with a history of 50 years to new content and diverse themes from animation, science fiction, horror, and more.".
