Myanmar ends state of emergency, announces election date
Aug 01, 2025
Naypyidaw [Myanmar], August 1: Myanmar's military government announced on July 31 that it was ending the state of emergency imposed after a coup in February 2021 and would restructure administrative agencies to prepare for new elections, according to AP.
Under the restructuring plan, Myanmar's military government leader , Senior General Min Aung Hlaing , will give up two positions but remain at the center of power as acting president, AP reported.
The move comes as the last of seven decrees declaring a six-month state of emergency expires at midnight on July 31.
Myanmar military government spokesman Zaw Min Tun said "elections will be held within six months after the state of emergency is lifted," according to AP.
The exact election date has not been set, but Min Aung Hlaing has confirmed the election will take place in December 2025, according to the Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper on July 31.
"Due to the security situation in the country, we will also hold the upcoming election in stages depending on security and governance," Min Aung Hlaing said at a meeting of the Myanmar State Administration Council on the morning of July 30."
Looking ahead, I encourage everyone to continue to unite and help each other to succeed in the journey we still have to go through. We have passed the first chapter. Now, we are starting the second chapter," Global New Light of Myanmar quoted Min Aung Hlaing as saying.
