Nikkei tops 71,000-point mark for first time

Tokyo [Japan], June 18: Japan's Nikkei index surged above the 71,000-point threshold for the first time on Thursday, led by gains in semiconductor-related stocks.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 advanced 1.88 percent to 71,219.45 points after reaching an intraday record high of 71,293.64 points.
The broader Topix index rose 1.67 percent to 4,080.26 points.
Semiconductor-linked shares spearheaded the rally in the Nikkei, with 144 of the index's 225 constituent stocks advancing, while 75 declined.
