North Korea rejects Trump overtures, vows to expand nuclear arsenal

Sep 01, 2026

Seoul [South Korea], September 1: North Korea has reaffirmed its hardline stance towards the US and defended the further expansion of its nuclear weapons programme, a Foreign Ministry spokesman in Pyongyang said on Monday.
The spokesman accused the US government of having failed to change its hostile policy, pointing to Washington's continued insistence on the complete nuclear disarmament of North Korea as evidence. He also noted that the US was planning to hold a military exercise with South Korea and Japan the following week.
In a statement published by the state news agency KCNA, the necessity of North Korea's own nuclear programme was also emphasized.
"Our nukes serve as an absolute guarantee" for defending the sovereignty of North Korea and the nuclear weapons in the country's possession "and their sustained bolstering are the most responsible and correct option for ensuring regional peace and security," the spokesman was quoted as saying.
